Energy Efficiency

What it is
The National Construction Code sets minimum energy performance requirements for new buildings and for significant alterations. Demonstrating compliance requires an assessment — for housing, typically a thermal performance rating; for commercial buildings, an assessment against the Code's energy provisions. It is required documentation for building approval.
Residential
Thermal performance assessment of the building fabric — orientation, glazing, insulation, shading and construction — producing the rating and documentation required for approval. Assessing early, while the design can still change, is considerably cheaper than specifying your way out of a poor result later.
Commercial
Assessment against the energy provisions of the Code for commercial and non-residential buildings, covering the building fabric and services, and producing the documentation required to support the application.
When to get it done
Energy assessment is most useful at design stage, not as a box ticked before lodgement. Glazing area, orientation and shading are inexpensive to change on a drawing and expensive to change once specified — an early assessment tells you which of them your project is relying on.

Do I need an energy assessment?
New dwellings and most significant alterations need to demonstrate compliance with the energy provisions of the Code as part of the approval. Send us the drawings and we will confirm what your project requires.
When should the assessment be done?
At design stage, before the drawings are finalised. Changes to orientation, glazing and shading are straightforward on a drawing and expensive once construction documentation is complete.
